Why Civil Exists (Or: The Mother-in-Law Protocol)

22 July 2026 · 3 min read

Same formulas. Sensible labels. For gifts, shared bathrooms, and anyone who loves the juice but not the nickname.

About twenty minutes after we fell in love with Handsome Fucker as a name, someone asked the obvious question: what happens at Christmas?

Beard care is a gifting machine. Daughters buy it. Partners buy it. Mothers-in-law buy it with the best of intentions and the worst possible product name to wrap. Nobody wants to gift-wrap The Rug Rub and hope for a warm smile across the turkey.

There's also the shared bathroom problem. You can love a product and still not want its nickname judging you from the shelf while the in-laws brush their teeth.

So we built Civil. Same emu oil formulations. Clear, masculine, gift-safe labels. Face & Beard Oil. Body Moisture. Anti-Chafe Balm. No performance. No nicknames. Quiet care that doesn't need explaining over lunch.

Civil isn't a retreat from who we are. It's a second door into the same house. Some people want to join the gang. Some people want the results without the stand-up routine. Both are welcome. Both get free delivery on pre-orders. Both get the same bloody oil.

If The Hairy Bastards is the pub story, Civil is the bottle you leave out when the vicar visits. We needed both. Because losing a sale to etiquette felt stupid when the formula was already sitting there, ready to behave.
